Exhibition in Galeria Diferença Lisbon - 09.01-05.02.2025

the expression “Jemanden um den kleinen Finger wickeln” can do be translated as “to wrap someone around the little finger.” It describes a form of influence where one person abandons their own intuition to follow the objectives of another, allowing themselves to be manipulated. This type of control is characteristic of many systems that exercise power and create dependencies, often with an invisible impact. Particularly, colonial and postcolonial structures exert control through emotional bonds, social norms, and economic pressure, while simultaneously shaping identities and perceptions.
This expression does not merely refer to manipulative control but also evokes a gesture reminiscent of knitting or threading during sewing. In the presented works, this dynamic is visually manifested through a series of images that represent the fragile balance between destruction and potential. A decaying birdcage, overgrown with plants and spores, symbolizes the loss of control and the embrace of an overwhelming nature. Crumpled and damaged maps evoke shattered notions of ownership and domination, shaped by colonial forces. Wounds in ceramics, reminiscent of bodies scarred by the past, confront traces of trauma and alienation.

These works capture the tension between the possibility of change and inevitable decline, addressing the marks of destruction and resistance to renewal in a crumbling world shaped by exploitation in all its dimensions.
